One way is by sending scientific \u201c<\/span><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/soundingrockets\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sounding rockets<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8221; into the Earth\u2019s upper atmosphere to take measurements. One location from which these instruments are launched is <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pfrr.alaska.edu\/content\/welcome-poker-flat\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Poker Flat Research Range<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Fairbanks, Alaska, part of the <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gi.alaska.edu\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">University of Alaska Fairbanks Geophysical Institute<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Nine undergraduate and graduate <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/astrosociety.org\/education-outreach\/amateur-astronomers\/eclipse-ambassadors\/program.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eclipse Ambassadors<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> visited Poker Flat in January 2025 as part of Eclipses to Aurora: Winter Field School at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. There, they met with scientists, engineers, and Range personnel as they took part in a hands-on learning experience.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As one of their assignments, participants crafted \u201cepiphany essays\u201d describing their learning. The students felt welcomed by the multidisciplinary team that was preparing rockets for launch, and that feeling continued as we returned and observed aurora at the T. Neil Davis Optical Science Operations Center. Students enjoyed an introduction by Dr. Don Hampton, saw scientists and engineer teams at work on <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/science-research\/heliophysics\/nasa-rockets-flickering-vanishing-auroras\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rockets<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to study pulsating and diffuse aurora, met a grad student testing her instruments, and went to the University of Alaska Fairbanks <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/lrlpfrr.community.uaf.edu\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lidar Research Laboratory<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to learn about their research. The Range is staffed by dedicated personnel like the rocket range director, <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.uaf.edu\/news\/career-at-rocket-range-energizing-fun.php\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kathe Rich<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as well as personnel from NASA Goddard\u2019s <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/wallops\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wallops Flight Facility<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Virginia. We braved the cold to see the rocket pads\u2014from which rockets would be launched in just a few weeks\u2014and the blockhouse from which the rocket team monitors rockets and their payloads, communicates with mission\/range personnel, contractors, and space, aviation and weather agencies, and controls the launches. In the Science Observation Center (SOC), we were able to observe aurora outdoors and indoors, while checking the space weather data like rocket scientists.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Being at Poker reminded me of my own graduate student rocket experience, where I met fellow graduate student Dr. Marilia Samara, now the Principal Investigator (PI) leading the Black and Diffuse Aurora Science Surveyor <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.uaf.edu\/news\/three-rockets-will-ignite-poker-flats-launch%20season.php\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rocket<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and leading the investigation with her own grad students. Another rocket friend and colleague from my grad student days is Dr. Robert Michell, PI of the <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/sites.wff.nasa.gov\/code810\/news\/story301-36.380%20381%20GIRAFF.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">GIRAFF mission<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/science-research\/heliophysics\/nasa-rockets-flickering-vanishing-auroras\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">launched earlier this year<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, after our visit.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2196\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2196\" style=\"width: 914px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/blog.aurorasaurus.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Untitled-design-1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-2196\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.aurorasaurus.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Untitled-design-1.png\" alt=\"To the left, two pictures of women working in a rocket lab. It reminded me of my first time stepping into Johnson Space Center during my <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/learning-resources\/nasa-community-college-aerospace-scholars\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NCAS<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> experience. Just like then, I felt inspired by the possibilities of what we could learn and achieve when we push the boundaries of exploration. Neil Davis Optical Science Operations Center, Poker Flat Research Range, just before midnight, I looked up and felt the sky fall down on us. The aurora was mesmerizing, it sent shivers down my spine and my eyes grew wet\u2014not with tears, but from the biting cold wind\u2026.I felt a nostalgic rush of adrenaline. \u201cYou don\u2019t feel like this every day,\u201d I thought to myself. That rush took me down memory lane, as fleeting memories flashed before my eyes. The task itself may seem simple, but the complexities are immense. It serves as a poetic reminder that our most significant endeavors often rely on the support of others. We work together toward a common goal, and when we reach that final, pivotal moment, the culmination of brainstorming, sleepless nights, stress, joy, and hard work results in something remarkable. The rockets, poised on the launch pad, ready to ascend in a pillar of flame, symbolize more than just engineering or mathematics. They represent our shared curiosity and determination, coming together in one moment, under immense pressure, to achieve something extraordinary.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014Jeffrey<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These students remind us why we do science: to discover, innovate, protect, and inspire.
